The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.

In today’s “me” obsessed culture, we are very self focused. While it is necessary to self improve and constantly work on us, an important part of living a complete and happy life should also include being a part of and contributing to a community where you can help, share and support others.
Alliance for Women in Media National Capital is thrilled to announce the theme for 2016, For the Love of H.E.R. (Helping Everyone Reach.) For the Love of H.E.R. is aligned with our mission to Connect, Engage, and Empower all players in media and allied fields with events throughout the year that promote reaching the highest heights, sharing knowledge and resources, and serving our community.
The New Year is usually a time of resolutions and self reflection and while it is important to put yourself first sometimes, it is also imperative to help others whenever possible. Sharing valuable information in business may seem foreign to some because we live in a culture that often sees the world as one giant competition. As leaders in our fields, rising to the top did not occur without help and support from others; we did not achieve our goals alone. AWM-NCAC wants to help our community change the thought process of hoarding information. Our theme aims to give women who are in media and looking to grow, expand, or network as well as women in other fields looking to get into and learn more about the industry, the tools that are needed to reach their goals.
Although there has been progress: Today, only 26 women are serving as CEOs of Fortune 500 companies (5.2%). The share serving as CEOs of Fortune 1000 companies is virtually the same (5.4%). (Pew Research: http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2015/01/14/chapter-1-women-in-leadership/). The Balancing Act series of 2015 gave women a guide to balancing life and career, personal branding and last but not least becoming and an entrepreneur; all essential tools in shaping women for roles as CEOs.
For the Love of H.E.R. will continue to elevate women and by “Helping Everyone Reach” encourage women to spread the seeds of their success with one another so that we will continue to see a rise in women flourishing and earning leadership positions. There is strength in numbers; one woman can make a difference but an army of women can change the world.
